For operators investing in new trucks, the handover process marks the critical transition from showroom to worksite. We sat down with Patrick ‘Pat’ Ryan, Isuzu Australia's National Fleet & Handover Training Manager, to discuss why this moment deserves more than ceremonial ribbon cutting.

Q: What's the real purpose of a truck handover?

"It's many things, but ultimately it’s about showing we care enough to spend quality time helping customers understand what they've just invested in," Patrick explains.

"Everyone, from the decision-maker to the driver should see the value delivered.

"Many operators discover features months later - or after avoidable incidents. A proper session prevents this by building immediate confidence in the technology they've paid for."

Q: What do customers most want from this experience?

"The number one question I get? 'How can you teach my drivers to save fuel?'"

"Whether its diesel or electric, operators want confidence their asset will perform efficiently and return safely.

"Today's trucks are technological marvels, but complexity can overwhelm. Smart operators want hands-on coaching, not just a brochure and a handshake."

Q: What does an effective handover look like?

Pat's approach has three non-negotiable elements…

  1. The walkaround "Before anyone starts the engine, we walk the truck together. I highlight everything from camera placements to battery access points - it surfaces a bunch of questions before drivers hit the road."
  1. Cab confidence  "We make drivers comfortable with controls, especially critical when upgrading from older models. Something as simple as phone pairing becomes second nature."
  1. Road experience
"This isn't a 20-minute lap," Pat stresses. "I've spent full days ensuring someone is road ready. We turn hills into fuel-saving classrooms and city streets into safety labs."

Q: How do you handle resistance to safety systems?

"I tell drivers, ‘The more the truck warns you, the more it's trying to save you - and others.'”

“These systems protect livelihoods as much as lives.”

Pat’s approach…

  • Demonstrates why safety alerts trigger,
  • Shares real-world incident prevention stories,
  • Emphasises downtime cost reduction.

"Veteran drivers often return months later admitting, 'the truck made me a better driver.'"

Q: What lasting value should operators expect?

"Our relationship doesn't finish when you drive away.

“Operators know they can call anytime - whether it's three days or three months later. That's how real trust gets built."

Pat achieves this through…

  • Train-the-trainer programs that multiply knowledge.
  • Proactive check-ins ensuring features deliver genuine value.

Pat's handover insights

  • ROI boost: Unlocks every efficiency feature you've paid for.
  • Safety dividend: Proper training reduces incident rates.
  • Asset longevity: Correct operation prevents early wear.
  • Downtime: Confidence means fewer operational errors.
